The Psychodynamic approach-

Freud suggested that most behaviour was determined by the sex drive/life instinct or the libido, but later he added a death instinct or thanatos. He believed that people have strong impulses towards self-destruction as a result of their desire to return to the tranquility of the womb, only achievable in death. The conflict this produced with the life instinct meant that such emotions tend to be directed outwards to other people in the form of aggression.
